UK versus Florida - Saturday March 8, 2014 (thoughts by Jeff Schrembs)
The keys to winning on defense; play the 3, stop the guards, and BLOCK Young from the boards and each and every possession.
The keys to winning on offense; play fast and strong. Give Lee and Willis more than a token minute. They are big. They have length. They can be matchup nightmares. And if one of them gets hot OR gets some fouls on the gators it will change the outcome. The Harrisons need to quit with the “hands on top of the head like a coat hanger bobblehead” looking for calls. Quit with the fancy lob attempts.. Quit with the turnovers. Bring the ball upcourt with some speed and quit bouncing on your feet all the time. And when your brother is on the bench quit acting like you just lost the last round of candy crush To our Young start shutting your man down. God gave you arms and legs for a reason and it is to SHUT DOWN YOUR MAN every game. If you do that, and make some shots, your confidence will boost and teams will have to adjust for right now they do not fear you at all. To WCS we need you. We always have. You can take us to the title. No one else but you. We need you every game. We want your jersey highlighted at Rupp/UK forever. You can do it. To Randle get out for a 10 foot shot once and a while. Quit spinning around like a roulette wheel. They KNOW you do that all the time. And then you drop your arms down, with the ball, on the floor. Hint – they know that too. To Alex UK fans owe you and Willie and JP and Hood a great deal. You have a unique name and you are as smooth as a new BMW M series. Run that baseline – defend – hit those boards like they owe you money.
Footnote – in Cal’s interview today he said that the assistants are now assigned certain players to sub in and out. WOW – it took how many loses for the assistants (otherwise know as the sitting – non emotional – 3 amigos mannequins) to do something in the game. Good step but they can do more including holding the refs accountable. So what if you get ejected (no disrespect) but it at least will show that you care and that you stand up for the players. PS – Strickland QUIT BEING ON YOUR CELLPHONE 24/7. Come on. When you played in the NBA how would you react to the coaches with their head down and texting or using their phone the whole game. When you played you were aggressive so be the same coaching. It IS NOT ENOUGH to get the name brand players here they deserve to be taught, and held accountable, during the games. Find the balance between support and accountability.
This game will not determine the NCAA results. This game WILL show if these players “get it”. If they don’t then we are in for further disappointment. If so, then we will be happy NOT because we are fans but because you came – you played your heart out – you left an excellent mark on the history of the NCAA. You came to UK to have a chance to win the NCAA. You now have that chance. You have the talent. Just give it your all from the tip of your head to your longest toenail. Then, after you beat Florida, do it for another 8 – 10 games.
